Training as an Independent Contracting Team Asset

Training inside an HVAC, plumbing, or electrical independent contracting team is a unique aspect that will continually work in a service company’s favor if team members learn to appreciate the inherent qualities that make consistent training so powerful.  When all members of a company team give their full effort and embrace the right mindset when going into a training session then each team member will benefit in many ways; both in ways that will empower them personally as well as with skills that will grow their company and become leaders in their industry.  In today’s blog, we are going to touch on two of the important aspects that come along with strong, consistent, and meaningful company training.  As we delve into this topic remember that when we train, we gain and we retain:

-Train to Gain-

When an HVAC, plumbing, or electrical independent contracting company consistently trains all company team members on topics and material that is pertinent to the employees’ needs at hand then each team member will gain knowledge, understanding, and new skills.  Team members can be exposed to tons of new situations while they are out in the field at a client’s homes, installing systems and products, or speaking with new clients on the phone.  When a new situation occurs and employees have a means to address their questions and concerns within the training session, then they can gain useful and needed help while their inquiries are fresh on their minds.

When company coworkers are continually learning new skills and techniques whether in sales, qualifying, maintenance, or customer service; then each member will feel more confident, prepared, and qualified to address any new situation that is thrown their way.  However, learning these new proficiencies and procedures is only the first component that makes up a strong team-training regimen.  The second useful aspect of consistent training is that these newly learned skills have a means to be retained because useful training has a hint of repetition thrown into the mix in order to ensure that new knowledge is locked into team members’ minds.

-Train to Retain-

While learning and gaining new knowledge is an important asset of training, all that new knowledge and skill means nothing if it is not retained so it can be used in the field.  Training works to make knowledge in areas such as service, sales, leads, and customer service second nature to company team members.  Each team member should have such a strong grasp on their skills that they can draw them out on a call at the drop-of-a-hat.

But in order to retain training information, there must be a bit of repetition.  This is not repeating lesson after lesson for days on end but rather mixing in a recap session on previous topics from time to time or even creating a game or contest that tests previously learned skills and knowledge.  Retaining knowledge is the second part to the important learning process that occurs within team training sessions.  When independent contracting teams in the businesses of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical learn and embrace the power and beauty of training then they will be equipped to become leaders in their industry.

Training is a means for a company team to gain and retain unique knowledge, professional skills, and beneficial techniques.  Here at S.E.T., we know how important training is to the growth and health of independent contracting companies.
